Premenstrual syndrome:these symptoms indicate that you have PMS

What is premenstrual syndrome?

Menstruation is a phase that can be particularly painful for some women, especially those suffering from premenstrual syndrome (PMS). This is a period disorder which affects no less than eight out of ten women. The pains and mood swings, characteristic of this premenstrual episode, extend over several days preceding the onset of menstruation and do not end until the moment of discharge. In itself, premenstrual syndrome consists of a series of physical and psychological symptoms. These disorders make the menstrual cycle difficult to bear for those who are affected. Without the appropriate treatments, this condition is even disabling. In addition, there is an aggravated form, “premenstrual dysphoric disorder”, which affects approximately 5% of the female population of childbearing age.

What causes premenstrual syndrome?

Themenstrual cycle is a real hormonal upheaval that affects the body in different ways, from one woman to another. In some, the periodic fluctuation of hormones, namely estrogen and progesterone, in the blood causes the body to react abnormally, hence PMS. However, hormonal factors are not the only cause. Indeed, genetic parameters can also make a woman's body predisposed to premenstrual syndrome. Similarly, a low blood level of serotonin, but also a deficit of magnesium and calcium, can explain these premenstrual symptoms in most cases.

Physical symptoms of premenstrual syndrome

In a nutshell, premenstrual syndrome is a chain of pain and discomfort. During the week before your period begins, women with PMS may be prone to:

  • Dizziness
  • Headaches;
  • Fatigue, accompanied by muscle and joint pain;
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Tingling in the breasts;
  • Abdominal bloating and cramps
  • Gastrointestinal problems ranging from nausea and water retention to constipation and diarrhea;
  • Insomnia.

Of course, the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome manifest differently from case to case. This condition can also aggravate pre-existing disorders, such as eye problems or even respiratory disorders.

Psychic effects of premenstrual syndrome

In addition to the unbearable physical pain it causes, premenstrual syndrome is accompanied by a series of psychic symptoms. Its most common effects are:

  • Irritability
  • Disorders and mood swings
  • Anxiety attacks and restlessness;
  • Depression
  • Nervous tension.

All these disorders are the result of the significant hormonal variation that occurs in the woman's body at the time of the menstrual cycle. In addition, if the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome increase, it is advisable to talk to your gynecologist to find palliative solutions. Otherwise, did you know that cats could cause PMS?
