Drinking your tea too hot could be dangerous for your health

A study conducted by researchers from the University of Medical Sciences in Tehran (Iran) shows the link between drinking tea at too high a temperature and an increased risk of developing esophageal cancer. Published March 20, 2019 in the International Journal of Cancer , this study was conducted on over 50,000 people aged 40 to 75 between 2004 and 2008. The result is there:drinking more than 700 ml (nearly 3 cups) of tea every day at over 60°C would increase the risk of having esophageal cancer by 90%.

Waiting for your tea to cool

But beware, this does not mean that you should no longer drink tea (and then what!). David Malka, digestive oncologist at the Gustave Roussy Institute in Villejuif, explains on France Info that to reduce the risks, it is enough not to drink your tea when the water is boiling, and that it is better to wait for the water to cool in the cup. Tea lovers are therefore reassured, it is drinking too hot tea that would be dangerous for your health, and not the beverage itself.
