Pepper is now the alternative to bread for a healthy sandwich

At the start of 2019, perhaps you have resolved to eat better, leaving aside junk food as much as possible in favor of fruits and vegetables. We know how hard it can be to give up the good stuff, so today we're bringing you an alternative to outright deprivation:replacing some ingredients with healthier ones. The concept is perfectly illustrated by a hybrid dish spotted in the United Kingdom, the pepper sandwich. We are not talking about including strips of pepper in the sandwich, but rather about placing the contents of the sandwich in the pepper. Indeed, the crunchy fruit vegetable acts as bread, and the idea comes from nutritionist Rachel Paul, known under the nickname “Collegenutritionist” on Instagram (where she has some 288,000 subscribers… Yes!). Her post, in which she describes the bell pepper sandwich as "the coolest thing ever" (not exaggerating, if you want our opinion), still reached 15,000 "likes", indicating that many people are ready to try their hand at the somewhat special preparation.

A “light and satisfying” meal

The specialist specifies that the dish contains only 110 to 140 grams of protein. As for the volume of the “sandwich”, which can lead to difficulties during tasting, she offers a solution:“You can reduce the size of the pepper by cutting off its rounded edges, in order to make the sandwich flatter. Keep the slices cut to dip them in guacamole for example, during a next snack ". The young woman also insists on the nutritional quality of the preparation, which includes more water in her diet and which is, of course, healthier. “The water in vegetables is very hydrating […] A lot of people think that you have to drink water to stay hydrated, but the water in vegetables matters too. Next, peppers are much lower in calories and carbohydrates than bread. It therefore allows you to enjoy a light and satisfying meal ". Between the two vegetable halves, you can insert chicken, tomatoes and a slice of cheese. For those who abhor peppers (which don't have to be green, yellow and red also work very well) but who are interested in the "healthy" alternative, a large tomato or even thick slices of cucumber have the same benefits. So, are you tempted?
