5 reasons why you wake up at night

Whether you are insomniac or not, waking up in the middle of the night is a nightmare, especially when it is frequent. Not only do we risk being tired the next day, but above all, we find ourselves thinking and wondering why we woke up. If the answer is not "a huge noise" or "a kick from Bibi", don't panic:there are several reasons that can explain these nocturnal awakenings.

1/ The room is at the wrong temperature

Whether the bedroom is too cold or too hot, the effect is the same:it can be difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. For the record, experts recommend sleeping in a room at 19°C.

2/ The mattress is too hard

Sleeping on a very (too?) firm mattress can put pressure on your lower back, shoulders and hips, which prevents you from sleeping well. The ideal? Being able to test a mattress before buying it, which avoids unpleasant surprises...

3/ The urge to pee is strong

This is a common occurrence for pregnant women, but it affects others as well. We are talking about nocturia, a phenomenon that frequently affects people over 50, but not only. Do not hesitate to talk to your doctor about it. And if you ever suffer from this disorder, avoid drinking too much in the evening.

4/ Alcohol does not help

You may feel like you fall asleep faster when you've had alcohol, but the worry is that you're more likely to wake up during the night. In question:the fact that alcohol reduces the duration of REM sleep, the phase during which we dream and the brain works to reorganize memory. The solution:don't go to bed when you're still pumped (or worse!), even if it's very tempting...

5/ Stress is an important factor

Stress plays on the speed of falling asleep, whether positive or negative, because it results in intellectual excitement and nervousness, and can also cause awakenings in the night, which, without necessarily going as far as anxiety attack, can make it difficult to fall asleep again. There, only one solution (even if we know it, it's easier said than done):try as much as possible to relax before going to bed, whether through meditation, listening to relaxing music, coloring… And we keep in mind that in any case, it is not by worrying that we will solve a problem, so there will always be time to find solutions the next day.

Good luck!
