Leukemia:two babies cured thanks to immunotherapy

A miracle ? We are not far from it! In the UK, two babies aged 11 and 16 months with acute leukemia went into complete remission thanks to immunotherapy. This technique (never tested on such young patients) consists of taking white blood cells from a donor in order to inject them into the body of the sick person. For information, leukemia is a blood cancer linked to the abnormal multiplication of white blood cells in the bone marrow. Very aggressive, this pathology greatly weakens the immune system.

Immunotherapy:a promising treatment

In parallel with chemotherapy (which is the classic treatment for this type of cancer), the doctors of the two babies therefore used immunotherapy. The goal ? Boost the natural defenses of both patients. And the experiment was a success! In just 15 days, the injection made it possible to overcome all the cancer cells present in the body of the two girls. Three months later, the two babies received a bone marrow transplant to restore their immune system and evacuate the donor cells. And today, the two girls are in very good health! As for immunotherapy, it is still undergoing clinical trials but researchers are confident about its future experimentation on a larger scale.

Very good news!
