A single fatty meal can have consequences on the liver

When a pizza catches our eye, it's sometimes hard to resist. A new study could make our task easier! Conducted by researchers from the German Diabetes Center, it reveals that a single meal high in saturated fat can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a disease characterized by an accumulation of fat in the liver. A good reason to decline dishes that are too rich!

Metabolic changes

For the purposes of this study published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation , the researchers asked 14 healthy participants between the ages of 20 and 40 to consume a palm oil-based drink, flavored with vanilla or water, before analyzing the liver metabolism of each individual . Result:in individuals who consumed the palm oil drink, they observed an immediate increase in fat in the liver, high triglyceride levels, insulin resistance and an increase in glucagon, a hormone which causes an increase in the amount of glucose in the blood. Do not panic, cracking for a cheeseburger from time to time will not immediately make us sick! "We assume that lean, healthy people are able to compensate for excessive consumption of saturated fatty acids, however, prolonged and repeated exposure to such nutrients will eventually lead to chronic insulin resistance and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease,” say the scientists.

Something to reassure us, while making us more vigilant!
