Teens:starting classes later would be good for your health

Teenagers love to sleep (and they need it!), but they also love to stay up late. And to choose, they prefer to snack on a few hours of sleep rather than giving up watching an episode of their favorite series (or even two or three…), chatting with their friends or reading a few chapters of a book (yes, yes there is still avid readers among teenagers!). 69% of young Americans sleep less than 8 hours a night, while the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that teenagers aged 13 to 18 sleep between 8 and 10 hours a night. So in the end, the ideal solution might be to start classes a little later... In any case, this is what a study carried out jointly by several American medical institutions suggests.

Positive consequences for teens

After analyzing the results of 18 studies carried out previously, the researchers came to the conclusion that a later start to the school day could have positive consequences for adolescents. By starting classes an hour later, high school students get an average of 19 minutes more sleep each night. Beyond an hour, approximately 53 minutes of additional sleep are gained. It doesn't seem like much, but the results are clear:these few minutes would reduce sleepiness during the day, the number of current delays, absenteeism and even better, the number of traffic accidents. On the other hand, on the rating side, the results of the study are mixed and do not show any significant improvement. Well, as long as there is no degradation, it's fine...!
