Red meat is safe… for healthy people

The study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association of Internal Medicine (JAMA) this Monday, August 1, 2016 studied the diet of more than 130,000 people, between 1980 and 2012. And the finding is clear:if the lean proteins (white meats, nuts, fish…) reduce the risk of death, the consumption of fatty proteins (red meats, eggs, dairy products) on the contrary, increases this risk… in people who do not have a lifestyle healthy. Healthy people would not be affected!

People with a healthy lifestyle eat more lean protein

The scientists behind this research are themselves quite surprised by this result. “The impact of fatty protein consumption was expected to be less in the group of people with a healthy lifestyle, but not that this link disappears completely,” said Mingyang Song, a researcher at the Massachusetts General Hospital and co-author of this study. "But when we looked at the data more closely, we found that the group of people with an unhealthy lifestyle ate more red meats, eggs and high-fat dairy products, while the group of people having a healthy lifestyle consumed more fish and poultry…” he continues.

Morality? If you're athletic, don't drink (almost) and don't smoke, you can eat whatever you want! On the other hand, if you consume a lot of alcohol, are overweight, smoke and/or do not practice sports, it is better to limit fatty proteins and turn to proteins. lean. The researchers also advise to prefer the consumption of proteins present in bread, cereals, pasta, beans, nuts and legumes.

It still took them three decades to figure it all out!
