Is there a risk with 3rd generation pills?

What you need to know.

All the pills can promote the formation of clots in the veins and therefore lead to phlebitis. But studies have shown that this risk is multiplied by 4 with 3rd and 4th generation pills such as Mercilon, Minulet, Jasmine, Qlaira… (full list on ansm.sante.fr or has-sante.fr). A phenomenon that can exceptionally evolve into pulmonary embolism, but remains rare (4 cases out of 10,000 users). The risk is increased if you smoke, are over 35 or have a bleeding disorder. In addition, the consequences of phlebitis or pulmonary embolism are not insignificant:venous or respiratory insufficiency, edema of the ankles, varicose veins...

If you are already taking a 3rd or 4th generation pill…

The risks are especially significant in the first year. Beyond that, there is no reason to interrupt your treatment if you have not had phlebitis and you have no family history. In any case, we regularly check in with our doctor.

If you want to take the pill again or for a first prescription.

We prefer a 2nd generation pill (Minidril, Adépal, Perléane…), just as effective. It is true that the latter can lead to weight gain, the appearance of acne or breast tension. But, in any case, the 3rd or 4th generation pills do not clearly bring any benefit in this respect.
