Can we consume honey after the expiry date?

The expiration date has become a real reference. The proof, in France , 20% of food waste results from date of expiration. Too scared when we see that we have exceeded the DLC, our first instinct is to put in the trash . However, there are a large number of foods that can be widely consumed after the DLC. The date of minimum durability (MDD) is, in turn, a simple indicator . Many foods are eaten therefore longer after the deadline. And the honey is a large part of it. It is also "imperishable". Like salt, rice or sugar . So don't panic if your jar of honey has been sitting on your shelf for two years. You can go there.

Why can't honey expire?

The honey is eternal. And this for four reasons. Honey has a very reliable water content . As a result, bacteria cannot develop. It is also mainly made up of sugars, which prevents growth microorganisms. Bacteria also struggle to grow due to pH honey which is sour . But that's not all. Honey has its own enzymes which allow it to produce hydrogen peroxide, an antimicrobial which inhibits the growth of microorganisms. This is why you can, without risks , consume honey after its DDM. The key is to keep it in good conditions . To do this, be sure to close the jar tightly and do not expose it to excessively high temperatures. Room temperature is recommended.
