The bloated stomach problem comes in different forms. It causes the emission of intestinal gas or flatulence. It is also the source of meteorism and bloating. These symptoms are often associated with irritable large bowel syndrome when they recur frequently.

In general, intestinal disorders cause abdominal pain, but it is benign. Be careful though, because these signs also appear when:

  • An intestinal infection;
  • Appendicitis;
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease;
  • Food poisoning.

Bloating also generates stomach aches, an unpleasant smell, gurgling and a feeling of heaviness.

What is the origin of the swollen belly?


The bloated belly usually appears because of diet. For example, some people cannot tolerate cabbage, cauliflower, or broccoli. When they eat it, they suffer from bloating and flatulence. Other foods can also cause a bloated stomach. Among them, it is possible to cite:

  • Legumes:beans, broad beans, lentils, peas;
  • Whole grains and derived foods;
  • Dried fruits
  • Starches.

Like laxative medications, some artificial sweeteners also cause bloating.

Chronic or transient constipation is often the source of the bloated belly. In this case, the ingestion of natural laxatives becomes necessary to cure it.

Sugar-free sweets and chewing gum also cause bloated belly. Indeed, they contain substances called polyols which promote the production of intestinal gas.

Know that the swollen belly is one of the premenstrual syndromes. Abdominal cramps and constipation occur a few days before menstruation.

At the time of menopause, hormonal changes promote the appearance of a fatty mass in the abdominal area. It enlarges the belly and slows down metabolic reactions.

To reduce bloated belly:

  • Take your time eating and chew food properly;
  • Also limit the consumption of dishes that promote the production of intestinal gas;
  • Avoid swelling foods, chewing gum and carbonated drinks;
  • Eat anti-bloating herbs:cumin, fennel, cilantro, etc.;
  • Play sports
  • Massage your belly.
