When should I replace my running shoes?

You don't need much for running, good running shoes are the most important. How do you know when to replace your running shoes?

After how many kilometers should you replace running shoes?

You can see when your sole is worn out, but the tricky thing is that the shock absorption of your shoes often deteriorates faster than the soles wear out. According to some, this happens after 750 kilometers, others only replace their shoes after they have walked 1000 to 1500 kilometers.

Why isn't there just a clear guideline?

It's hard to tell when your shoes are worn out. It depends not only on the quality of your shoes, but also on your body weight and how severe the shocks are that your running shoes have to endure.

Check your running shoes

It is best to inspect your shoes regularly to determine if they need to be replaced. What should you pay attention to?

  1. Press the center of the sole with your thumb. Does the sole feel hard and does it not give well? Then it might be time for new running shoes.
  2. When you press in the middle of your sole, you should actually be able to press it in a bit, creating lines in the sole. Are there already wrinkles and lines in your sole? Then the suspension of your shoes is no longer optimal.
  3. Listen to your body. Have you been having pain in your feet while running lately that you didn't have before? Ask yourself if it could be your shoes.
  4. When in doubt, go to the store and try on new running shoes, preferably the same model as you already have. That way you can directly compare the feeling.

Tip for frequent runners

Do you run regularly? Then it is wise to alternate two (or more) pairs of running shoes. This way your shoes can recover longer in between and that is good for the preservation of your shoes.
