Moving more in 2020? That's how you keep it up!

A new Year a new start. You have resolved to exercise more, but you know that you often give up in a few weeks. How can you make sure you keep it up this time?

Don't be so aware of yourself

Okay, you're not in the shape you want, in fact, you're pretty dissatisfied with the way you look now. Still, you plan to get started ion the gym, but what will others think of your body? Or what if you are completely out of breath from five minutes on the treadmill, while the other person taps the twenty minutes with two fingers in his nose?

Research shows that as many as a third cancel a gym membership because they are too concerned about how they come across to other athletes. So here are some tips to prevent that:

  • Remember that everyone is busy with themselves and that they have something to do other than busy with you.
  • Try to avoid the crowds at the gym until you feel a little more confident.
  • Put on something that makes you feel good.
  • Don't look too much in the mirror and put a nice playlist on your mobile for distraction.

Make it a game

Or maybe a competition and reward yourself when you reach a goal. For example, make sure you lasted just a little longer on the treadmill than last time or that you outperformed your workout buddy. It is of course not the intention that you treat yourself to a piece of cake or a bag of chips! But reward yourself with an appointment at a beauty salon or buy that one sports shirt that you have been eyeing for a while.

Don't overdo it

You'll give up faster if you turn your training session into a grueling workout. Build it up slowly and don't overdo it. Don't make it harder on yourself than it is. As a result, you see more fun in sports and you can last much longer.

Find something that suits you

Maybe you really don't think a gym is a nice way to get more active and you prefer to do something completely different. Perhaps you warm up from a nice walk through the dunes, or you prefer to go wild during a zumba class or a bike ride along the canal. But maybe you enjoy hula hooping for half an hour during your favorite Netflix series? Tastes differ. If you do what you really love, you'll last much longer!

Use it for a moment with friends

There are probably friends who have also resolved for the new year to get off that couch more often and get moving. Have fun together! This way you can chat and motivate each other in the meantime. You may be a little less frantic because you're chatting too much, but anything better than a couch potato be!
