What is pronation?

Pronation, overpronation… If you start running you may have already heard the terms. We explain what pronation is.

Pronation is the way you tilt your feet inward while walking to absorb and distribute the shock.

Underpronation
The outside of your heel strikes the ground at a greater angle, forcing your lower legs to absorb more shock. This is more common in people with high insteps.

Neutral pronation
The foot lands on the outside of the heel and tilts inward to cushion the shock. This is the best way to land while running, it generally gives the least chance of injury.

Overpronation
Overpronation is common. Especially with low arches or flat feet. It means that your foot lands on the outside of the heel and then tilts inward too much, shifting the weight to the inside of your foot.

How do you know which 'deviation' your feet have?
Your old (running) shoe already reveals a lot:is there a lot of wear and tear on the outside? Then you are probably dealing with underpronation. It also works the other way around:wear on the inside of the shoe is usually caused by overpronation. In a good sports shop they can advise you about your running style and the best type of shoes for you.
