Marianne: 'One of the most important qualities a top athlete must have is the gift to peak:to perform at the right time at the right time. It has happened to me several times in my career. People regularly ask me how I do it, that peaks. It is difficult to give a good answer to that, because a lot comes from within and is difficult to define.

It is true that in the run-up to an important tournament I am becoming more and more goal-oriented. I temporarily draw a line through all peripheral matters that cost me energy, including social activities. That sounds selfish, but as a top athlete you sometimes have to be.

The art of peaking is often the art of letting go. Self-discipline is the magic word. Self-discipline is not only of great importance for top athletes, but for everyone who pursues a certain goal. Someone who wants to lose weight will also have to stand strong and delete things. No more apple pie with whipped cream or fries with. Denying yourself things is not always fun, but it is necessary to achieve your goal.

It often helps me to constantly realize how much I want something. And I am convinced that if you really go all out for something, then a lot is possible.'
